Another reason why women are more prone to depression is the potential effects of hormones. Women experience frequent variations in hormone level during menstrual cycles, during and after pregnancy, and during menopause. That is why depression is common in women under any of these conditions. Men are less willing to accept their symptoms, and they usually look for consolation in alcohol and other substances. This masks the depression, or it is viewed as just alcohol or drug abuse.

They involve taking time out to have fun and entertainment, not overworking, and saving time to do the things that one enjoys. Sharing problems with loved ones, living a healthy life, and avoiding feelings of regret could go a long way towards preventing and curbing depression.
